UNDP Launches Investment and Jobs Initiatives, With Nepal Among Pilot Countries
Two new UNDP programmes aim to mobilise investment and expand employment in developing economies, including pilot work in Nepal.
BANGKOK, October 15, 2026 (TFNOS) — The United Nations Development Programme has unveiled two initiatives intended to help developing economies attract investment and turn economic growth into employment, with pilot cooperation already underway in Nepal and four other countries.
UNDP announced the Investment Accelerator and the Jobs for Prosperity Facility on October 13 during the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund annual meetings in Bangkok. The agency said the programmes will be supported by expanded partnerships with the World Bank Group, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Investment Accelerator is intended to help governments improve investment regulations, prepare projects that can attract financing, engage investors and move projects toward implementation. The Jobs for Prosperity Facility will focus on identifying industries with employment potential, aligning workers' skills with employer demand and addressing obstacles to hiring.
UNDP estimates that 1.2 billion young people will enter the workforce in the coming years, while only 400 million jobs are projected to be created. The figures illustrate the scale of the employment challenge; they are projections, not a measure of jobs already lost.
The agency said pilot work under a recently signed cooperation framework with the World Bank Group is underway in Nepal, Yemen, Haiti, Lebanon and Ghana. The pilots focus on policy and governance changes aimed at encouraging private investment.
UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo said the initiatives seek to link governments' development priorities with financing and technical expertise. The agency has not announced a country-by-country job creation target or reported employment outcomes from the newly launched programmes.
The announcement comes amid concern over developing countries' ability to create enough jobs while managing financing pressures. The success of the initiatives will depend on whether proposed reforms and investment projects lead to sustained business activity and additional employment.
