UK Shop Price Inflation Climbs to 2.1% in October, Highest Since February 2024

A new British Retail Consortium survey shows food and non-food prices accelerating ahead of the government's budget, as retailers cite rising operating costs.

Shop prices in the United Kingdom rose 2.1% in October 2026 from a year earlier, the fastest annual increase since February 2024, according to figures released Tuesday by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The reading was up from 1.4% in September and signals renewed pressure on household budgets.

The retail trade body's measure showed food prices rising 2.9% from a year earlier, compared with 2.5% in September. Non-food price inflation increased to 1.7% from 0.8%, indicating that price pressures are spreading beyond groceries into categories such as household goods and clothing.

The BRC said higher energy, transport, employment and packaging costs are making it harder for retailers to absorb expenses without passing them on to customers. Its chief executive, Helen Dickinson, warned that stores were approaching the limit of their ability to shield shoppers from the cost increases accumulated over the past two years.

The October shop-price data are based on prices collected during the first week of the month. They represent a narrower basket of goods than the United Kingdom's official consumer price index, which also includes services and other household expenditures. The two inflation measures should not be treated as interchangeable.

The release comes ahead of the government's budget scheduled for October 28. The BRC has urged ministers to address property-related business taxes and employment costs, arguing that further pressure on retailers could translate into higher prices. Those proposals are the industry's requests, not government decisions.

Although the latest data show that prices are increasing faster than a year earlier, they do not mean every product has become more expensive or that the overall price level increased 2.1% during October alone. The figure is the annual change in the BRC's shop-price index. Future readings will show whether the acceleration persists.
