South Korea's overall industrial production rose 3.0% in September 2026 from August, with semiconductor and automobile output leading a broad monthly rebound, according to government statistics released on October 30.

The Ministry of Data and Statistics said the all-industry production index increased 1.1% compared with September 2025. Manufacturing production jumped 9.9% from the previous month and was 1.6% higher than a year earlier. Mining and manufacturing output together rose 9.0% month on month, according to Aju Press, which reported a 19.2% increase in semiconductor output and a 39.9% rise in automobile production.

The gains extended beyond factories. Retail sales increased 3.6% from August, and equipment investment rose 5.3%, marking simultaneous monthly increases in production, consumption and investment. Services output rose 0.5%, supported by wholesale and retail activity and transport and storage.

The monthly improvement did not mean every measure had recovered on an annual basis. Retail sales remained 0.4% below their September 2025 level, while equipment investment was 10.1% higher than a year earlier. The volume of construction work completed increased 5.8% from August but was 1.6% lower than a year earlier.

Average manufacturing capacity utilisation reached 76.8%, up 5.6 percentage points from August. The government's coincident business-cycle indicator, intended to reflect current economic conditions, rose 0.5 points. Its leading cyclical indicator, which is designed to signal future turning points, fell 0.1 points.

The figures suggest a substantial rebound after weakness in August, particularly in industries linked to semiconductor demand and vehicle production. They do not by themselves establish that household demand has entered a sustained expansion. Aju Press reported that retail sales for the full third quarter were still 1.0% below the previous quarter, despite September's monthly gain.
