Reddit Plans Login Tests as Search Referrals Decline Despite 53% Revenue Growth

Reddit will test a more login-focused browsing experience outside the United States after reporting weaker search referrals and stronger advertising revenue.

Reddit said on October 29, 2026, that it plans to test requiring more visitors to log in before browsing its platform, a change prompted partly by declining search-engine referrals and concerns about automated collection of its content.

The social-media company intends to begin tests in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter. It has not announced a date for a worldwide rollout or a final policy governing every page visible to people who are not logged in. The proposal therefore should not be described as an already implemented global login requirement.

The announcement accompanied Reddit's third-quarter financial results. Revenue rose 53% year over year to $895 million, including $847 million in advertising revenue. Net income reached $283 million, while daily active unique visitors rose 12% from a year earlier to 130.3 million. US daily active visitors declined 2% year over year, and the company said search referrals had been falling during October.

Chief executive Steve Huffman said more logged-in users could improve the relevance of advertising and help limit unauthorized scraping of Reddit content. The company has licensing relationships for data access and wants to distinguish those arrangements from automated collection outside agreed terms. A logged-in experience could also alter how people reach discussion threads from search engines, though the eventual impact remains uncertain.

Reddit has said its incognito browsing feature will remain available in revised form and that a login does not necessarily require users to disclose their real identities. The forthcoming tests will help determine how to balance visitor access, advertising performance and controls on data use. The company's revenue growth is a completed quarterly result; the broader access changes are still a plan.
