Rambus reported record third-quarter revenue of $218.3 million on Monday, October 26, as demand for its memory-interface products supported another increase in sales.

The California-based semiconductor technology company said revenue for the quarter ended September 30 rose 22% from approximately $178.5 million a year earlier. The latest total exceeded Rambus's earlier guidance range of $210 million to $216 million.

Product revenue reached $114.3 million, up 22% year over year and 15% from the preceding quarter. Rambus also reported $77 million in royalty revenue and $27 million from contracts and other activities. These are different revenue streams: product sales cover hardware supplied to customers, while royalties arise from licensed intellectual property.

The company reported net income of approximately $74.6 million and diluted earnings per share of $0.69 under generally accepted accounting principles. Operating cash flow reached $102.5 million during the quarter, according to its financial disclosure.

For the fourth quarter, Rambus expects total revenue of $227 million to $233 million and diluted earnings of $0.68 to $0.76 per share under standard accounting rules. These figures are management forecasts rather than completed sales or earnings.

Rambus develops chips and intellectual property used in memory systems, including technologies relevant to data centres and AI computing. Increased demand for memory bandwidth can support the company's business, although customer adoption, pricing and semiconductor industry conditions can change.

Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totalled about $776.9 million at September 30. The company released the financial update after the US market close on October 26.

The announcement concerns Rambus's own reported results. The outlook is subject to uncertainty, and record quarterly revenue does not establish that similar growth will continue indefinitely.
