EUROCONTROL Awards Frequentis Surveillance Support Contract Through 2031

The European aviation organisation has renewed a long-running industrial partnership to maintain and develop ARTAS, a system that combines aircraft surveillance data.

EUROCONTROL has awarded Austrian technology group Frequentis a further long-term industrial partner contract to support its ARTAS air traffic surveillance system, extending the collaboration through 2031, according to an announcement published on October 29.

The agreement covers centralised ARTAS maintenance and operational support under the CAMOS VI industrial partner arrangement. ARTAS, short for Air Traffic Management Surveillance Tracker and Server, combines information from multiple sources, including radar and aircraft position broadcasts, to create a consistent picture for air traffic controllers.

Frequentis said ARTAS supports surveillance for around 90% of Europe's daily flights and that the latest award continues a partnership established in 2001. Those coverage figures are company-reported and do not mean that the contractor itself controls European air traffic.

EUROCONTROL's published technical description confirms that ARTAS processes multiple surveillance feeds and that its CAMOS team handles software maintenance, support requests and updates for participating air navigation organisations. The new award concerns the operation and evolution of that existing platform, rather than the creation of a new European air traffic control authority. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed in the material reviewed.
