Coinbase returned to profitability in the third quarter of 2026, reporting net income of $718.7 million despite a substantial decline in cryptocurrency transaction revenue, according to financial results released on October 29.

The US digital-asset exchange earned $2.51 per diluted share, compared with net income of $432.6 million, or $1.50 per share, in the year-earlier quarter. Its transaction revenue fell 43% to approximately $590.2 million from $1.05 billion a year earlier, reflecting a weaker trading environment. Total quarterly revenue was approximately $1.22 billion.

The profit figure needs qualification. A substantial part of the earnings improvement reflected gains on cryptocurrency holdings rather than a comparable rise in the fees generated from customers' trading. Independent financial reporting identified lower operating expenses as another contributor: those expenses declined about 17% to $1.15 billion from $1.39 billion.

Coinbase has been expanding products beyond conventional spot cryptocurrency transactions, including derivatives and prediction markets. Management said these activities are becoming more significant, but their expansion does not eliminate the company's exposure to fluctuations in digital-asset prices or transaction volumes.

Subscription and services revenue was approximately $570 million during the quarter. This category includes products with revenue drivers different from direct trading fees and is therefore relevant to the company's diversification strategy.

The quarterly return to profit does not establish that cryptocurrency trading has recovered to its year-earlier level. Investors evaluating the results need to distinguish gains on assets held for investment, recurring service revenue and transaction income. The company has not guaranteed that the earnings mix will remain stable in subsequent quarters.
